According to the USGS reports, on 9th May 2010 at 1 P.M, a powerful earthquake with magnitude of 7.4 has attacked the Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake hit at a depth of 45 kilometers under the sea just off the island and was felt 289 kilometers away in the large city of Medan in Sumatra. At least 353,000 were exposed to severe shaking by the earthquake.
A tsunami warning was issued for Indonesia and the people along the coast of Sumatra by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. A warning is yet to receive by the other parts of Indian Ocean.
The government of India stated that there is no immediate Tsunami threat to the country’s mainland and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
“There is no immediate Tsunami threat to the country’s mainland and Andaman & Nicobar Islands due to the earthquake in Sumatra. Ministry of Home Affairs advises the state governments to take appropriate precautionary measures”, said by the ministry spokesperson.
