Google has celebrated the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope with a Doodle. Here are the top 10 things you need to know about it
  •  It was named after astronomer Edwin P.Hubble
  • A huge observatory, it has revolutionised astronomy by providing unique views of the Universe.
  • It orbits Earth every 96 minutes, 360 miles above the surface of our planet, at a speed of five miles per second.
  • Hubble is a type of telescope known as a Cassegrain reflector and it’s main mirror is 2.4 meters in diameter
  • More than 30,000 objects have come under the telescope’s gaze and it has beamed hundreds of thousands of images back to Earth.
  • Hubble has revealed the age of the universe to be about 13 to 14 billion years old and has played a key role in the discovery of ‘dark energy’, a mysterious force that causes the expansion of the universe to accelerate.
  • More than 6,000 scientific articles have been published based on Hubble data
  • It is expected to remain functional until at least 2013.
  • Hubble’s components will eventually degrade to the point where the telescope stops working. And soon after its orbit decays it will crash back to Earth.
Hubble’s successor, the James Web Space Telescope, is scheduled to launch in 2014.
